How long have you been in Hair Design and how did you realize your career path?
I have been in hair since 1996 although I was introduced to it in 1983 when I cut my own hair and that of my friends. I got into banking and worked my way up to a manager during my 10 years. When I left the bank, I decided that I wanted a career with a bit more fun and the day that I resigned was the birthday of a friend who then became my instructor and later my business partner, Martin Hillier. My career path has allowed me to be involved on stage with some of the biggest names in the industy; Benny Togninni (Australia), Andre Collinge (UK), Aki Watanabe (Japan), Sue Pemberton , Damien Carne, Russel Hyde, Russel Parks, Eric Fisher, Martin Hillier (Senscience) and many other on show circuit. It has led me to be lead hairstylist at Sydney Australia Fashion Week, printed in magazines all over the world, television appearances, photos shoots and so many other interesting things.
Please state a positive quote, and or words that you live by or your personal career motto.
You can’t lose if you don’t try so Just say “yes”
What are your goals pertaining to your Artistry?
I think I am pretty much living the dream… I travel internationally which allows me contribute to the creativity of the countries that I attend. I can be a bit more hands on in the development of the events that we do so that adds a great deal of challenge. I have always thought it would be great to work in a school as I enjoy teaching so much.
Who are your mentors and why?
Robert Lobetta is one, having the courage to “retire” and take his role that was so public with him. He left nothing behind. Martin Hillier, for his love of hair. He would do anything for the industry. Damien Carney for his amazing work as a creative hairstylist and his ability to create easy to follow styles that inspire. Sue Pemberton for her see-through approach to the tough subject of hair color – simplifying what some make so difficult. My grandmother for teaching me that none of this matters (don’t say that – lol)… Family and friends are what count.
Are you a salon owner?
Yes, I am co-owner of The Lounge Hair Studio in Vancouver, BC. Being a salon owner requires, commitment and dedication to details and an ability to communicate effectively with your team. It is hard but enjoyable work, the hardest part being the importance of creating a team of like minded people that you can provide a place for them to flourish creatively, personally and financially.
Where were you trained and educated? Who were you trained by?
I apprenticed under Martin Hillier from 1996 in Vancouver BC. Since then, I have attended classes through, Vidal Sasoon, and private classes. For me training is not something that you have from the past it is something that you apply today and every day… I am still in training.
